For the final CAD project we had to create a redesign of the M185 mouse modeled in the previous project. The model created should have high quality organic surfaces and house the same internal components like the PCB. The top, middle and bottom housings were put into shapeways to get a quote and then finally everything was rendered in Keyshot.
MASTER MODEL
I ended up having to create the solid bodies for my top and middle housings within my master model as they were to complex to be thickened or shelled |
TOP HOUSING
The top housing was tricky to get right, after trying to thicken it that would not work so I offset the middle housing surface and created a loft between that and the top. When trying to knit that it would not turn into a solid due to gap issues, this was solved by cutting it in half, doing a surface fill which allowed me to create a solid that was then mirrored. |
MIDDLE HOUSING
The middle housing was quite the most challenging part of this project for me, it would not shell or thicken, as seen above I tried to cut off the top with a surface split so that I could shell the bottom and then merge it all together, due to the fillets at the front I was unable to do this so I had to split off the front as well, do a loft on that and then in the end combine all 3 parts to give me my middle housing. |
BOTTOM HOUSING
The bottom housing was quite straight forward, I added a new battery cover that slides out at an angle but other than that it was kept simple. |
I ran into some trouble importing my model into Keyshot, I think this is becasue I have an older version and it needs to be updated, this issue was fixed by saving the model as an .step file. I thought this had fixed the problem but some of the details were not showing up in the Keyshot file but they were minor so I kept moving on. |
In the end, after many hours I ended up with a pretty good looking mouse with clean surfaces. Over the course of this project I have had to find creative ways to apply all the new surfacing and solid modeling skill we have learnt. It has been challenging but I have gained very useful experience that will be very helpful in the future.
